Potato Battery Could Be Last for 3 Years

The sophistication of smart devices has not been matched by battery endurance. That's why, gadget companies were competing to make them long lasting battery devices.

Well, recent findings from researchers at Virginia Tech University may be a solution. They created a breakthrough by using bio-energy from natural sugar ingredients, rather than chemicals such as lithium batteries which are common in gadgets.

Batteries with this natural sugar energy sources the researchers claimed is ideal for use on mobile phones. In contrast to other bioenergy such as hydrogen and methanol, sugar material arguably more secure because it is non-explosive and flammable.

" It is logical when we try to ' harvest ' natural energy source that is environmentally friendly manner, for use in batteries. " said Professor Yang YH Percival, spokesman for the researchers, as quoted from Tech Radar , Thursday ( 01/23/2014 ) .

Interestingly, the source of energy is derived from natural starch in the daily diet, one potato. This starch is broken down gradually Zhang mentioned using enzyme cascade.

In this way, electrons with significant quality would appear to produce a flow of energy. Previously, there had been research on sources of energy from sugar. This latest breakthrough, Zhang and his team claimed could produce significant energy.

" The method can now store 10 times more energy than the energy source with basic materials chemistry. " said Zhang .

The report, published in the scientific journal Nature Communications wrote , battery-based potato starch can be used up to three years of battery powering in a single charge .
